Lisa and Heath met through a mutual friend who set them up on a date where they shared a bottle of wine and talked until the restaurant closed. The rest is history!
Heath proposed in Monterey, CA at Point Lobos National Park on a secluded peninsula overlooking the ocean. Their stunning wedding was held at Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford, CA.
Lisa was absolutely gorgeous in her illusion top gown featuring floral embroidery. Her hair was elegantly pinned up and accented with a white flower. A true definition of a glowing bride.
Thanks to Clane Gessel Photography for sharing this beautiful day with us.
How and when did the couple meet?
Most of you probably think that Heath and I met at the hospital. The scenario seems reasonable since we both spend majority of our time at work! Unfortunately, it was not a scene from an episode of Grey's Anatomy. We met through mutual friends at a bar, Firestone (Heath also likes to mention that the sun was up when we met). I was post-operative day 1 from having wrist surgery. I was sporting a full arm splint and my personality might have been masked with Percocet. Heath and I started talking as our friends were catching up. He told me all about his love for sports, making friendly wagers, food, and wine. He also slyly asked for my number making it seem as if he needed it for a future reference. I paid the tab for everyone and went home early. He asked me out on a date about three times after our first meeting. I always came up with a reason not to go and he finally gave up. Our mutual friend Christopher Le made our first date happen by whispering in both of our ears that we should go out on a date. Heath claims he called me, but I remember it as I texted him and asked him out (the woman is always right). We went to dinner on August 16, 2013, shared a bottle of wine, conversed and closed down the restaurant. Since then between our busy work schedules, we have been fortunate enough to travel to Hawaii, Caribbean, Mexico, and Dominican Republic.
How did the proposal take place?
I was presenting at the California Society of Plastic Surgeons meetings in Monterey and Lisa accompanied me on the trip. After the morning sessions and my presentation, we went to Point Lobos National Park for a hike. I proposed on a secluded peninsula overlooking the ocean.
I had planned to propose while hiking Napali Coast in Kauai the following week after the conference. However, the more I thought about traveling through TSA with the ring made me nervous. I could see the TSA searching my bag and pulling out the ring in front of her ruining the surprise!
What was your fondest wedding moment?
Heath: Watching Lisa turn the corner to walk down the isle toward me with the sun radiating off her beautiful gown, reflecting a halo of sunshine; she looked like an angel and I knew I was the luckiest man in the world.
Lisa: After the Ceremony, Emily set aside canapés and two glasses of champagne for us to enjoy in the Cedar Room at Auberge. We were both so calm and happy. It was a nice intimate moment to be alone during the wedding chaos!
Where do you reside and what are your occupations?
We live in Sacramento, CA. Heath is from New Orleans, LA and Lisa is from Southern California/Idaho. We share a passion for fine wine and dinning, hence why we chose to have our wedding at Auberge Du Soleil. We enjoy the outdoors, hiking and fitness. Heath is an avid freediver with a passion for spearfishing. Lisa has been involved in multiple medical mission trips most recently to Kenya. We plan on going on mission trips together once Heath is finished with training.
Lisa is a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) providing anesthesia to variety of patient populations and works at three different hospitals (reason why we were able to have such a wonderful wedding!)
Heath is finishing his general surgery residency at UC Davis and will continue on as a fellow in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Who were your favorite wedding vendors?
Every vendor we had provided a unique and unparalleled service. We would gladly use all of them for future events.
I must say that EVERYONE did an amazing job! I look back at my wedding with no regrets. It was exactly what we wanted. Carrie Aldous was perfect and took the extra time to make my day special even adding services at last minute! Clane, you are an amazing photographer for a gift of capturing more than just the people but the scenery and atmosphere.
Phillip, videographer, was professional and easy to work with. He even stayed longer to capture every moment/detail!
Say Ya! Photobooth was a hit amongst our guests. I debated on whether or not I should pay the extra money in getting a photobooth but I am so glad I did! The guests loved it and I love having all the copies of the fun pictures they took!
Rion Design, gorgeous arrangements! I wasn't to precise on what I wanted and trusted Lindsey and her team to do what they feel is best. She nailed it!
BellaRosa Strings received many compliments from my guests on their music and performance. DJ Dave kept the party going right until the end!
Emily and Sara from Auberge. They are so wonderful! Emily truly made the day run smooth. She was so easy to work with and prompt on her communication. She made me feel as if I was the only bride for that year (which I am well aware of all the weddings that Auberge hosts!). She made sure that I could enjoy my day and not have any worries. She is a gem and Auberge is fortunate to have her!!
What advice do you have for future brides?
Heath:It is your wedding day, do not forget to take time for yourself and enjoy it. Countless hours of hard work culminate into a 6 hour party; you have done your part. Be a proper host, but enjoy the moment, it's a once in a lifetime event.
Lisa: Do not go for the best deal or cheapest vendor. Look at reviews and work of the vendor prior to hiring. Also, if you have an on-sight wedding planner, ask the planner for a list of vendor recommendations and have them pick two or three choices from each category. I went off the vendor recommendations from my wedding coordinator and have no regrets. They are the ones that work with the vendors and see the work on a monthly if not more basis. Have fun and enjoy your day. It goes by so fast! I also recommend getting a videographer because the day will be such a whirlwind that it will be nice to have events captured that you might have missed! You can also watch it with your partner each year on your anniversary. Set a reasonable budget for your venue and don’t stress if you go slightly over budget. Plan a wedding budget that you will not be paying off for the next few years!!
