Coral fever has officially arrived. With Living Coral being Pantone’s new color for 2019, the wedding industry is poised to make this marvelous shade a big part of the year to come.
Not quite pink and not quite orange, it certainly commands any room it enters. Before the announcement from Pantone, we already saw this color popping up in weddings throughout this past year.
But don’t take my word for it. Heather Benge, owner of Styled Shoots Across America is loving this year’s choice.
“They say everything old becomes new again and I think that’s exactly what we are seeing with Coral. We’ve seen coral in the past, especially in the wedding industry, and while 1992 bridesmaids gowns may be burned in some peoples heads, I’m loving the bright color and think there are plenty of fresh ways to incorporate it into 2019 weddings!” Says Heather.

For Pantone, the color selection process is a serious one. They have become known for making statements with their color choices. According to their Instagram, they described it as:
“An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” They also go on to point out that the color symbolizes our innate need for optimism and joy. Something I think we all could use a little more of.
Because we know this color is going to grab hold of every part of the industry, we asked Karla Tompson from Duchess of Desserts how she feels about it from a cake & dessert perspective:
“Normally the announcement of Panatone’s color of the year, and the insistence of every designer to shove it down your throat would usher the deepest of eye-rolls from me. This year though I’m keeping them in their proper non snarky position. Living Coral is one of those colors that you can’t help but get excited about. The description itself offers a sense of warm hope, the promise of balmy weather and a renewed and greatly anticipated wedding season. For this cake decorator the excitement lies in the idea of icing bold swaths of color across white tiers of cake, full blooms of sugar flowers in every shade that coral has to offer. The potential flavor variations inspired by the color itself is equally intriguing. Imagine a slice of delicate white cake layered with the sweet tang of guava. Dried and sugared papaya on petit fours. Or even the most basic of peach cobblers served in individual ramicans garnished with candied peaches and coral rose petals. Panatone’s 2019 color has become a muse for the artist in me. My hope is that you as well find inspiration from the cheery Living Coral as I have.”

Being the color loving soul that I am, I can’t wait to see what’s coming for 2019. From the bridesmaid dresses all the way to the table decor, I am here for it every bit of it.
For now, here are some of my favorite coral weddings & styled sessions from the past year:
