Should you allow kids at your wedding?

The choice of allowing kids at your wedding is a matter of personal preference.  Some couples enjoy their company while others prefer to keep their wedding day an adult only event.  There is no right or wrong answer and the decision should be made by both the bride and groom.

Kids can be sweetkids at wedding

From an outsider’s perspective, I feel children do bring a certain air happiness and innocence with them while making the overall festivities more enjoyable.  It is also a good time for the family to see each other and for cousins to build bonds.  I tend to think guests will stay longer since they do not need to pick their children up or leave them with a sitter too late.

But I don’t want screaming kids running around?

Now don’t get me wrong. I do understand that they can also run, cry and shout during the most inappropriate times, but on the flip side, I feel that moments like those help to keep everyone grounded and de-compress the sometimes-rigid environment.

Do I have to pay the same price for their meals?

As far as meal options go, ask your caterer to make kid-friendly foods such as pizza, chicken fingers and french fries. This will not only keep them happy but you will also save money by not having to pay for gourmet meals most kids will not eat.

Sorry, but we still don’t want kids at our wedding!

If you decide not to allow kids, try and give parents as much advance notice as possible.  This will help to alleviate awkward questions from parents who don’t have time to arrange for childcare. Regardless of your efforts, you may encounter guests who will ask you to make an exception for their kids.  Avoid giving in at all costs, otherwise, you will offend your guests that did not bring their kids. This could also lead to arguments and unnecessary stress.

Remember to keep in mind that this is your special day and the whole point is to do what makes you happy. Your guests will respect your wishes and make accommodations as needed.
